Peer Leadership Guidelines

Caffeinated Church is a resource hub and learning lab focused on church communications, technology, and administration. It offers a variety of resources such as workshops, webinars, and articles to support church staff and volunteers in their ministry. Caffeinated Church encourages creative collaboration among church communities to foster growth through resource sharing and to explore the potential within their creative gifts inspired by their faith. 

From Expert-Led Workshops to Church Collaboration Meetings to Administrator Virtual Cafe Meetings to day-long Gatherings to Peer Mentoring Groups, there are various ways in which church staff and volunteers collaborate and share as well as support and commiserate with one another.

  • Empathy and Respect: Encourage members to approach each conversation with empathy, respecting diverse viewpoints and backgrounds.

    Active Listening: Promote active listening to understand the perspectives and needs of others genuinely.

    Encouragement: Support and uplift each other, recognizing the contributions and successes of peers.

  • Accessibility: Ensure all activities and resources are accessible to a diverse group of participants.

    Inclusivity in Discussions: Facilitate discussions that allow every voice to be heard, valuing all contributions equally.

    Cultural Sensitivity: Be mindful of cultural differences and aim to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and valued.

  • Clear Objectives: Start each meeting or gathering with clear objectives and desired outcomes to guide discussions.

    Shared Leadership: Rotate leadership roles among peers to share responsibility and encourage a sense of ownership.

    Constructive Feedback: Cultivate a culture where feedback is given constructively, and with the intention of mutual growth.

  • Mission-Driven Discussions: Ensure that all activities and discussions are aligned with the mission of supporting each other's ministries.

    Resource Sharing: Encourage sharing of resources, best practices, and experiences that can benefit others in their ministry.

    Community Building: Strengthen the sense of community by organizing activities that foster connections and shared learning.

  • Reflective Practice: Encourage regular reflection on activities and discussions to identify learning opportunities and areas for improvement

    Adaptability: Be open to evolving the structure and focus of meetings based on feedback and the changing needs of the community.

    Expert Input: Integrate insights from expert-led workshops into peer discussions to enrich learning and application in ministry contexts.

  • Confidentiality: Maintain confidentiality of shared personal experiences and discussions to create a safe and trusting environment.

    Integrity: Act with integrity, ensuring that all interactions and collaborations are honest, transparent, and ethical.

    Accountability: Hold oneself and each other accountable to these guidelines to uphold the quality and integrity of the community.

  • Open Communication: Encourage open and honest communication to address misunderstandings or conflicts constructively.

    Mediation Support: Provide access to mediation or support for resolving conflicts in a manner that strengthens relationships and community bonds.

Implementation and Monitoring

To ensure the effectiveness of these guidelines, CaffeinatedChurch.org works to create a feedback loop where participants can regularly share their experiences and suggest improvements. Review meetings with leadership help to meet the ever-evolving needs of the community and ensure that the organization's mission continues to be at the heart of all peer-to-peer collaborations.

Our Commitment to Inclusion and Belonging

Caffeinated Church is a Christian community made up primarily of leaders and congregations from The Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), The United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and other mainline Christian traditions.

Our community includes people from many denominations, backgrounds, and theological perspectives, and we value the richness that diversity brings. At the same time, Caffeinated Church is an inclusive and affirming community. We affirm the full dignity, belonging, gifts, relationships, and leadership of LGBTQIA+ people and people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.

We welcome thoughtful conversation and learning across traditions, but the dignity and full inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people is not a matter for debate within our community.

We are committed to creating spaces, online and in person, where LGBTQIA+ participants, presenters, staff, volunteers, and leaders can participate fully and authentically without discrimination, harassment, or exclusion.

Our ministry is to support your ministry, and we seek to do that in a community grounded in respect, generosity, curiosity, and the conviction that every person is beloved by God.
