Communications Fatigue & Cutting Through the Noise

Presenter: Joshua J. Smith

2020 has represented a monumental shift in worldwide communication behavior resulting from COVID-19. As the world continues to embrace social distancing, the workplace, schoolrooms, and congregations find a new home online. People are creating and consuming content around the clock in this 24-hour digital landscape. In an era already overloaded with text messages, app notifications, emails, and phone calls, how much is too much? What are the best approaches to cutting through the noise and being heard in a time when everyone is feeling the effects of communication fatigue? This 60-minute workshop was led by Joshua J. Smith, a faculty member of mass communications and public relations with the Richard T. Robertson School of Media and Culture at Virginia Commonwealth University.
